The 2027 BMW i3 is a fully electric vehicle produced and sold by BMW AG. The 2026 BMW i3 EV model is designed to compete in the premium sedan segment. The 2027 BMW i3 will be a completely different model from its predecessor, the exceptional hatchback, built on the company’s proprietary 800-volt “Neue Klasse” electric vehicle architecture.

The 2027 BMW i3 boasts an advanced suite of active safety technologies, supported by a central control unit called “Heart of Joy,” which integrates the powertrain, braking, and energy recovery into a single high-speed operating system. Multiple power outputs, including a high-performance M Performance version of the BMW i3, are designed to directly compete with the Tesla Model 3.

Inside, the 2027 BMW i3 features a clean, minimalist, and technological design with a large BMW Panoramic View display replacing the traditional instrument panel and projecting information across the full width of the windscreen. Part of the new iDrive X operating system, this is complemented by a large 17.9-inch touchscreen and optional 3D head-up display designed to place important information directly in the driver’s field of vision to keep their eyes on the road. The cabin also prioritizes sustainability, creating a premium yet eco-friendly environment with extensive use of recycled and renewable materials, such as select fabrics and synthetic leather options.

The interior layout benefits from the absence of a central transmission tunnel, a key advantage of the “Neue Klasse” dedicated EV platform, providing a more spacious and open feel compared to internal combustion engine vehicles. Physical controls have been simplified, and many functions have been moved to the central touchscreen or the new multi-function steering wheel with haptic feedback. However, physical buttons are likely to remain for essential functions, such as climate control. This combination of visual and digital interfaces, along with existing options such as the panoramic glass roof and advanced AI-powered assistants, creates a modern, intuitive, and seamless user experience.

2027 BMW i3 : Engine

The BMW i3 sedan marks the beginning of the sixth generation of eDrive technology, utilizing advanced electric motors that are lighter, more efficient, and approximately 20% cheaper than previous versions. For all-wheel-drive models, the powertrain design will uniquely combine an externally excited synchronous motor (EESM) at the rear and a compact asynchronous motor (ASM) at the front, thereby increasing efficiency while reducing reliance on exotic components. Early models like the i3 50 xDrive are expected to produce approximately 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque, and accelerate from 0-100 km/h in under 5 seconds.

Performance is further enhanced by the “Heart of Joy” central control unit, a high-performance supercomputer that integrates the drivetrain, chassis, and steering systems into a predictive brain for natural and precise handling. In addition to the standard models, the high-performance i3 M60 xDrive is scheduled to go into production in March 2027 and is expected to produce over 600 horsepower to directly compete with top-of-the-range electric sports sedans. This setup is supported by an 800-volt design that enables 400 kW fast charging, adding 350 km of range in just 10 minutes.

2027 BMW i3 : Safety

The 2027 BMW i3 safety comes with its new digital architecture, combining advanced driver assistance systems with a powerful “Heart of Joy” control unit that provides optimal response in seconds. Key safety technologies include the new BMW Panoramic View display, which projects crucial information onto the entire windscreen within the driver’s field of vision, minimizing distractions. The BMW i3 2027 is expected to offer a complete package of safety features, including adaptive cruise control with stop-start function, lane keeping assist with side collision avoidance, and predictive pedestrian protection; this provides a robust safety net for passengers and other road users.
