2027 Pontiac Aztek
The 2027 Pontiac Aztek is a mid-size SUV manufactured by General Motors. The 2027 Pontiac Aztek is built on a compact minivan platform, combining family car utility with rugged exterior styling. The Pontiac Aztek features a 3.4-liter V6 engine, optional front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and new features such as a removable center console cooler and an optional camper tent package.
Pontiac for its smart performance and pioneering the modern crossover trend, the Pontiac Aztek was widely criticized for its distinctive exterior design with extensive plastic body cladding. This led to commercial failure; the Pontiac Aztek later gained fame in popular culture as Walter White’s car in the TV series Breaking Bad and was recognized as a classic car ahead of its time.
2027 Pontiac Aztek : Interior
Inside, the Pontiac Aztek interior was designed with a strong emphasis on outdoor living and versatility, incorporating many innovations ahead of its time. The cabin featured a highly flexible seating arrangement; the rear seats could be easily flipped up, folded down, or removed entirely to increase cargo space. Notably, it featured a sliding rear cargo tray capable of carrying 400 pounds, which slid out for easy loading and doubled as a picnic bench. The center console was essentially a fully removable cooler that could hold up to a dozen cans of soda, with built-in cup holders and a handle, allowing owners to take their drinks directly to the beach or campsite.
Completing its functional design were several unique technology features designed specifically for convenience and entertainment. The Pontiac Aztek was one of the first mainstream cars to offer an optional Head-Up Display (HUD) that projected vital trip and speed information directly onto the windshield. The rear cargo area featured an integrated stereo control panel with two headphones, allowing those sitting in the back or having a picnic to control the music without having to enter the front cabin. There was also a dedicated camping package inside; this package included a specially designed air mattress inflated by the vehicle’s air compressor, transforming the entire rear of the SUV into a fully enclosed tent.
2027 Pontiac Aztek : Engine
The Pontiac Aztek was offered with a single engine option throughout its production run: the 3.4-liter LA1 V6. This powertrain produced 185 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque and was paired only with a four-speed automatic transmission. While the engine was reliable and provided enough low-end torque for everyday driving, it was often criticized for its lack of refinement and sluggishness. The heavy SUV, weighing in at nearly 4,000 pounds, felt sluggish when navigating highway maneuvers, and the old four-speed automatic transmission struggled to deliver a modern and responsive driving experience.
Buyers could choose between two drivetrain configurations: standard front-wheel drive or the optional Versatrak all-wheel drive system. The Versatrak system operates automatically, sending power only to the rear wheels when it detects slippage in the front wheels; this made it excellent for snowy or light off-road conditions. In terms of performance, the front-wheel drive model earned an EPA fuel economy rating of 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, while the heavier Versatrak model fell slightly short, averaging about 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. This fuel economy was standard at the time, but the engine setup prioritized usability over performance, resulting in a safe but unpleasant ride.
2027 Pontiac Aztek : Safety
The Pontiac Aztek offered standard safety equipment for its time, but received mixed results in official crash tests. Standard safety features included dual front airbags, four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS), and daytime running lights, while later model years enhanced protection with the addition of side impact airbags as standard. In independent tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Aztek received an overall “Mediterranean” rating in the medium-size crash test. While the single-seat configuration managed to provide a good cabin environment, the IIHS identified a significant safety concern during the test: the driver’s front airbag deployed too late, and the 2027 Pontiac Aztek driver’s head nearly hit the steering wheel during the crash test.
