The Mazda MX-5’s elegant design of the cabin makes the most of a tidy space and prioritizes driving pleasure. Most of the controls are easy to reach due to the small cabin. The infotainment system’s control knob is oddly placed, but the spare touchscreen controls make this less of an issue. The cup holders are also awkwardly placed, making getting a drink extremely cumbersome. The cabin is comfortable for two adults and contains only the essentials.

Meanwhile, the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR 86 twins crush the Miata when it comes to cargo space,  foldable rear seats allow owners to carry up to four full-size wheels and tires between the trunk and the cabin.

The Miata features a touchscreen infotainment system, enhanced by an easy-to-reach control knob and hard buttons on the center console. Every Miata comes standard with Bluetooth connectivity and a CD player. Navigation is standard on Grand Touring and a dealer-installed accessory on Club models; Mazda is added via SD card. Also included is HD radio compatibility. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all models.

We regularly saw 27 mpg on both city streets and highways during our two weeks with the Miata, though we might be a little too enthusiastic about the go pedal. In other tests, Miatas regularly exceeded fuel economy estimates.
