Rivian R2, built on an all-new platform, the R2 will offer multiple powertrain configurations, including a rear-engine all-wheel-drive version, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive option, and a top-tier tri-motor setup capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 mph. The Rivian R2’s interior features, as well as comfort and efficiency, include both rows of seats folding flat for camping, two glove compartments for storage, and a power rear window for enhanced ventilation or towing long loads. Standard driver assistance features and a new camera and radar system will provide advanced autonomous driving capabilities for highway use.

The Rivian R2‘s most unique feature is its flexibility for indoor camping. All five seats, including the driver’s seat, fold completely flat to create a single, open sleeping area. This is complemented by a panoramic glass roof for stargazing and a power rear window that can be lowered into the trunk lid for better ventilation or towing long items. Sliding side windows also enhance the open feel, a flashlight is integrated into the driver’s door for convenience, while the passenger door houses a USB-C portable charger that doubles as a hand warmer. The technology in the R2’s cabin revolves around a large infotainment screen that controls many of the vehicle’s functions.

As an all-electric SUV, the 2026 Rivian R2 does not have a single engine, but instead operates with a choice of three different electric motor configurations. The entry-level model will use a single motor to power the rear wheels, while a more powerful pair of motors will power all four wheels. The top-of-the-line R2 will feature a performance-focused triple-motor setup—one motor at the front axle and two at the rear—and is expected to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3 seconds. Powering these motors is a new, modular battery pack using advanced 4695-type cylindrical cells from LG Energy Solutions, designed to improve energy density and output. This powertrain architecture allows all R2 models to reach a range of over 300 miles (480 km).
2026 Rivian R2 : Safety
The 2026 Rivian R2 is expected to have a wide range of advanced safety and driver-assistance features as a core part of its design. A new “vision stack” will employ 11 cameras and five radar sensors to enhance the vehicle’s awareness of its surroundings, paving the way for more advanced autonomous capabilities. The Rivian Autonomy Platform will include features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking as standard. While the R2 has yet to undergo formal crash testing by organizations like the IIHS or NHTSA, it is designed to earn high marks, building on the strong safety ratings of its bigger brother, the Rivian R1S. Rivian also revealed plans to introduce advanced eyesless autonomous driving technology for use in its second-generation vehicles, which will also include the 2026 Rivian R2 EV.
