The 2024 Kia Optima sleek family sedan offers a smorgasbord of different engines and hybrid drivetrains, but neither performance nor fuel economy is above average. Kia has an unrivaled powertrain warranty and excellent safety ratings, but the rear seat is smaller than some of its competitors and the hybrid models have reduced luggage space. On the other hand, it has a well-made interior and lots of standard driver assistance technology.

The 2024 Optima hybrid and plug-in hybrid now have driver assistants as standard, including adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistant. Both feature LED fog lights and customizable interior lighting. Other updates include standard wireless phone charging on all but the bottom two models, but now every Optima has pedestrian detection.

The interior of the 2024 Optima can be very pretty, but it can also be very plain. Likewise, prices are skyrocketing for better-equipped trim levels. There’s a huge gap between the top and bottom offers, but many drivers will likely find an affordable, happy medium after carefully perusing the order page. The Kia 2024 Optima family sedan feels spacious and spacious, especially at the front, where it has significantly more legroom than its competitors. The value of the Optima as a cargo carrier depends entirely on the model you choose.

Kia’s infotainment system is simple and easy to use, and there are plenty of power ports to roam. An 8.0-inch touchscreen with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard. Desirable upgrades include a powerful Harman Kardon sound system, built-in navigation, and wireless charging, but no mobile hotspot. Overall, the Optima 2023’s infotainment system provides an intuitive interface, although not exactly impressive.

2024 Kia Optima : Engine

The basic drivetrain is a non-turbocharged four-cylinder and six-speed automatic transmission. It’s quick but sometimes slow to react to inputs and sounds a bit rough when persuaded into its upper ranges. It prefers the smoother, sharper, and faster combination of the turbo 1.6-liter four- and seven-speed automatic transmission, which represents the second rung on Optima’s drivetrain ladder. The best-in-class turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder is refined and pleasant, but less powerful and significantly slower from zero to 100 km/h than its direct competitors.

However, the hybrid powertrain we tested on our highway fuel economy test route failed to impress in real-world conditions. In our highway test, the plug-in Optima delivered 41 mpg and performed 2 mpg below the EPA highway estimate. An Optima with the larger turbocharged engine gained 35 mpg, an impressive result that exceeded the EPA estimate of 4 mpg and tied with a similarly equipped Honda Accord.

2024 Kia Optima : Safety

The KIA Optima received excellent marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but the hybrid models did not pass crash testing. Optima has also been named Best Safety Choice+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The lineup also features several standard driver assistance technologies. 2024 Kia Optima safety features include adaptive cruise control, collision warning, lane-keeping assist, emergency braking, lane departure warning, and stop-go technology.
