There is no longer in production, the Jeep Commander retains a following among fans of Jeep vehicles, especially those who appreciate its classic Jeep design and ruggedness. The concept featured an experimental direct methanol fuel cell that generates electricity to charge a nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Full-time all-wheel drive was provided by a heavy-duty electric motor on each axle. The overall style influenced the development of the third-generation Grand Cherokee, which was six years away at the time, Commander concept had nothing to do with SUV production.

Other options, depending on trim level, include heated front seats, a navigation system, a sunroof, two dedicated skylights, and a rear seat DVD entertainment system.

All three engines come with a five-speed automatic transmission as standard. Base models can be equipped with a full-time all-wheel drive system, while the Limited uses the more advanced Quadra-Trac II (mainly optional) 4WD system that includes a two-speed transfer case.
