2023 Honda Clarity
The 2023 Honda Clarity is a nameplate used by Honda on alternative fuel vehicles. Honda Clarity was originally only used on hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles like the Honda FCX Clarity, the nameplate was expanded to include the battery-powered. In addition to the new generation Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. Clarity production ended in August 2021, and US leases for the fuel cell variant continued through 2022. The Honda Clarity 2023 is an eco-friendly sedan sold in two variations: hydrogen fuel cell or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).
The first is only available in California because it is the only state with a significant hydrogen infrastructure. Because the fuel cell is used to power an electric motor, the Clarity runs and feels like a battery-powered EV, and you can fill up a hydrogen fuel tank in just a few minutes. The Honda 2023 Clarity Plug-In Hybrid, meanwhile, uses a small battery pack paired with a gasoline engine. As a result, the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid offers 75 miles of pure electric range, but its backup petrol engine allows it to go as far as any regular sedan.
2023 Honda Clarity : Interior
Inside, the Honda Clarity‘s cabin is harmless, very logical in operation, and extremely comfortable. The Honda Clarity has a significantly shorter wheelbase than the Honda Accord, the difference being evident in the rear seat where there is almost four inches less legroom. An 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment interface is standard and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Touring version of the Clarity plug-in hybrid has factory navigation just like the fuel cell. The fuel cell model also has a 12-speaker sound system, while the add-on is content with an eight-speaker setup.
The 2023 Clarity steering is direct and requires appropriate weight at speed even if there isn’t much feedback or response. Handling is a similar experience, with good composure in the corners, but the lack of sharpness makes it feel heavy. The Clarity scores in the braking-only category, with good performance in routine driving, but lethargic feedback in more demanding situations. The add-on version of Clarity offers the most cargo room at 15.5 cubic feet. Unfortunately, the loading floor is not level and the space narrows towards the backrests. The rear seats fold in the add-on, unlike the fuel cell version. Overall, the Clarity offers acceptable rear storage considering bulky alternative fuel systems.
2023 Honda Clarity : Engine
The 2023 Clarity plug-in hybrid is powered by a 181 hp electric motor powered by a 17.0 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The car’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine mainly acts as a generator for the battery and rarely directly drives the front wheels. The plug-in hybrid accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and produces a total of 212 horsepower. The hydrogen-powered Clarity comes with a 174-hp electric motor that draws electricity from a fuel cell. As with the add-on, the fuel-cell Clarity’s electric motor drives the front wheels. The ClarityI accelerates to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds. This is faster than the other hydrogen-fueled vehicles currently on sale, the Hyundai Nexo and Toyota Mirai. Both versions of Clarity excel at touring. It is ride-friendly and the cabin is well-insulated from wind and road noise.
The Clarity plug-in hybrid has an EPA-estimated electric-only driving range of 78 miles. Going at 75 miles per hour, covered 41 miles before the engine started. That’s double the mileage got in Toyota’s Prius Prime. The EPA sets the hydrogen-powered Clarity’s range at 360 miles, depending on conditions and your driving style. The plug-in manages a combined 42 mpg on the EPA scale and 110 MPGe when you consider gas and electricity together. The EPA’s combined estimate measures 46 mpg on the highway in hybrid mode. In testing, it’s 49 mpg in a Prius Prime on the same route. The fuel cell Honda Clarity has a combined EPA rating of 68 MPGe, an average of 57 MPGe during a 300-mile test.
