2027 Smart Fortwo
The 2027 Smart Fortwo is an iconic two-seater microcar manufactured by the Mercedes-Benz Group’s Smart division. Smart Fortwo is known for its ultra-compact “one-box” body shape, rear-engine layout, and nimble urban maneuverability; the vehicle spanned three major generations before officially ending its initial production run in 2024. However, the badge is officially being revived as a next-generation, all-electric two-seater called the Smart #2.
The Smart Fortwo concept is now officially being revived for the 2027 model year as the Smart #2, an all-electric, next-generation city car co-developed by Mercedes-Benz and Geely that keeps the classic two-seat layout, rear-wheel-drive dynamics, and sub-3-meter length while modernizing safety, range, and technology. The primary competitors of the Smart Fortwo and the upcoming Smart #2 include ultra-compact urban EVs like the Citroën Ami, Fiat Topolino, Renault Twizy, Renault Twingo E-Tech, and the Scion iQ. The 2027 Smart #2 price starts at €19,990 / £17,900, while historical used Smart Fortwo models typically range from $7,000 to $10,000 depending on the year and condition.
2027 Smart Fortwo Interior
Inside, the 2027 Smart Fortwo interior maximized every millimeter of its ultra-compact footprint, utilizing an open, airy design to make the two-seater cabin feel surprisingly spacious. A signature feature was its playful, cloth-covered dashboard, often outfitted with distinctive pod gauges for the clock and engine RPM that swiveled on top of the console. Because there was no rear seat, the two passengers enjoyed legroom and headroom comparable to a midsize sedan, while the rear area utilized a practical split tailgate design—allowing users to open just the rear glass for quick loading or drop the lower panel to access a modest cargo bed capable of holding a few grocery bags or a carry-on suitcase.
The upcoming 2027 Smart #2 modernizes this urban cabin with premium materials and advanced tech, transitioning into a high-tech S-shaped digital cockpit. Fortwo introduces a unique continuous bench cushion for the lower seats combined with a completely flat floor, a clever design choice that allows the driver or passenger to easily slide across the cabin and exit from either side when parked in tight parallel city spaces. The dashboard features a driver-tilted central infotainment touchscreen, a digital gauge cluster, and an available premium Sennheiser audio system, all while expanding utility with an independent pass-through layout and an increased 305-liter trunk capacity.
2027 Smart Fortwo Engine
Historically, the Smart Fortwo relied on a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout to maximize cabin space within its tiny footprint. Across its first two generations, it utilized microscopic 0.6-liter to 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines co-engineered with Mercedes-Benz and Mitsubishi, which were mated to unique automated manual transmissions. By the third generation, Smart introduced a more refined 0.9-liter turbo or 1.0-liter naturally aspirated engine shared with Renault, pushing output up to 89 horsepower, before transitioning exclusively to an all-electric setup branded as the Smart EQ featuring a modest 17.6 kWh battery and a 60 kW (80 hp) electric motor.

The upcoming 2027 Smart #2 completely replaces internal combustion setups with a modern, fully electric powertrain built on the proprietary Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) platform. It features a rear-mounted 60 kW (82 hp) electric motor that drives the rear wheels, preserving the classic agile handling and tight turning radius of its predecessors. This motor pairs with a much larger 35.8 kWh CATL lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, giving an estimated urban range of up to 290 km (180 miles) on the WLTP cycle and supporting 65 kW DC fast charging to juice the battery from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes.
2027 Smart Fortwo Safety
The Smart Fortwo ensures a high level of safety thanks to its high-strength steel Tridion safety cell—a robust structure designed to dissipate collision energy around the passenger cabin rather than directing it into the interior. Smart Fortwo 2027’s distinctive design has been refined into the Tridion Cell EVO for the 2027 Smart #2 model; the new structure boasts impressive torsional rigidity of 39,000 Nm per degree and a reinforced roof capable of withstanding a crushing load of over four tons. The Smart Fortwo’s ultra-compact dimensions and this safety cell—combined with front, side, and knee airbags, an electronic stability control system, and modern driver-assistance technologies—enable this micro-car to meet rigorous global crash-test standards.
