2019 Smart EQ Fortwo is built on the charm of the standard FourTwo with the added bonus of virtually cost-free motor vehicles. The biggest problem is the practicality, not the size or scope: as a city car, the EQ ForTwo works best when you can upload it at home. To charge the Smart’s 10 to 80% battery pack, it can take as little as 40 minutes with a 22kW fixed charger, which lasts up to about 2.5 hours when using a conventional wall box. Plug the EQ for the domestic connection and the same charge will last up to six hours.

The Smart EQ For Two has the same funky and modern interior as its petrol-powered counterpart. Inside the Smart EQ For Two Electric Drive and you are greeted with a pleasant characteristic dashboard. There is a muddy level-like slide above the steering wheel that displays the battery status, while the infotainment screen works well. A further color screen remains in the speedometer and provides additional information on how to effectively use the power pack.

Inside quality is generally strong and even though a few scratch plastics have found inside, it is understandable at this price point. Each EQ ForTwo is equipped with LED lights, programmable climate control and a smartphone application that allows you to remotely monitor the charging and battery status of the car. The Smart Fortwo 2019 also features 15-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, and a MirrorLink Android smartphone jack.

Because electric motors do not use a conventional gearbox, your foot in the Smart EQ For Two puts its power into a smooth wave. With a 0-62mph time of 11.5 seconds, it can’t sound that fast, but up to 40mph acceleration is pleasantly alive, making in and out of city traffic and doddle. The suspension is also impressive as it absorbs asphalt and yellow spots.

The news is a little less encouraging outside the town, where wind and road noise makes more impact than we want – but that’s because the ForTwo’s car is almost silent. With a top speed of 80mph, the ForTwo is likely to venture into the broader world, but the acceleration is less impressive than 40mph. And fast travel is not a relaxing experience at all. The EQ ForTwo is not really designed for long distance tracks, so these shortcomings can be reasonably overlooked.
